What a simple pendulum is

A simple pendulum is a mass (bob) hung from a string or rod that swings back and forth under gravity. For small swing angles, its period (the time for one full swing back and forth) depends only on its length and local gravity, not on the mass or the amplitude of the swing.

How this calculator works

Enter the pendulum’s length and the local gravitational acceleration (9.81 m/s² for Earth’s surface). The calculator uses the formula T = 2π√(L/g) to find the period, and reports the frequency as 1/T.

This formula is accurate only for small swing angles (typically under about 15°) and assumes negligible air resistance and a massless, inextensible string. For general educational purposes.
