Natural Frequency of a Spring-Mass System

Every mechanical system with stiffness and mass has a natural frequency at which it prefers to vibrate when disturbed. For a simple undamped spring-mass system, the angular natural frequency is ω = √(k/m), where k is the spring stiffness and m is the mass. The frequency in hertz is f = ω / 2π.

Knowing the natural frequency matters for avoiding resonance — if an external force oscillates near this frequency, vibration amplitude can grow dramatically. This simplified formula ignores damping, which slightly lowers the actual resonant frequency in real systems.
