How pleated skirt yardage is calculated
A pleated skirt needs far more fabric width than your actual waist measurement because each pleat folds extra fabric back on itself. The ‘fullness ratio’ describes how much extra fabric is used: knife pleats typically use about 2x the waist measurement, box pleats about 2.5x, and fine accordion pleats up to 3x or more.
How this calculator works
The calculator multiplies your waist measurement by the fullness ratio to get the flat (unpleated) fabric width required, adds seam and hem allowances to your desired length, then converts that into total yardage based on your fabric’s width, rounding up to whole fabric widths as needed.
Actual yardage can vary with pattern style, seam allowances, and directional prints — always add 10-15% extra fabric as a buffer and check a full sewing pattern for precise cutting layouts.
