How the Reorder Point Is Calculated

Lead time is the amount of time between placing an order and receiving it. The reorder point tells you exactly how much stock you should have left when it’s time to place a new order, so you never run out while waiting for the next shipment to arrive.

The formula is: Reorder Point = (Average Daily Usage x Lead Time in Days) + Safety Stock. The first part covers what you’ll use up while waiting for the order, and the safety stock buffer protects against unexpected demand spikes or shipping delays.

This is a standard inventory-management formula used for general planning purposes — actual optimal stock levels can also factor in demand variability and desired service levels.
