What Is FIP?
Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is a baseball statistic that measures a pitcher’s performance using only the outcomes a pitcher has the most direct control over: home runs, walks, hit batters, and strikeouts. It removes the influence of team defense and ballpark luck that can distort ERA.
The Formula
FIP is calculated as ((13 × HR) + 3 × (BB + HBP) – (2 × K)) / IP + Constant. The constant (typically around 3.10, and recalculated each season) simply scales FIP so its league average lines up with league average ERA, making the two numbers directly comparable.
How To Read It
FIP is on the same scale as ERA, so a FIP near 3.20 or lower is considered excellent, while anything above 4.50 is below average. Because FIP strips out fielding and sequencing luck, it is often used to judge how a pitcher “should have” performed and can be a better predictor of future ERA than ERA itself.
