What Is the Duckworth-Lewis Method?
The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is used in limited-overs cricket to set a fair revised target when a match is shortened by rain or other interruptions. It works by comparing how much batting “resource” (a combination of overs and wickets remaining) each team had available.
The Simplified Formula
When Team 2 has fewer or equal resources than Team 1, Team 2’s par score scales down proportionally: Par = Team 1 Score × (Team 2 Resources % / Team 1 Resources %). When Team 2 actually has more resources than Team 1 (for example, a shorter first innings), the extra resource is valued using the average full-innings score (G50): Par = Team 1 Score + G50 × (Resource Difference / 100). Team 2’s target is the par score rounded down plus one run.
Important Caveat
The official DLS method used by the ICC relies on detailed, regularly updated resource tables and a licensed computer program rather than a single simple equation. This calculator provides a simplified, educational approximation of the underlying logic and should not be used as an official match target.
