What a DIN setting is

The DIN setting on a ski binding controls how much force is needed before the binding releases your boot — too low and the binding may pop off during normal skiing, too high and it may fail to release during a fall, increasing injury risk. DIN values are standardized under ISO 11088, which combines weight, boot sole length, age, and self-assessed skiing style into a recommended release range.

How this estimate is built

This calculator follows the general shape of the standard method: it starts from your body weight, adjusts up or down based on your skier type (cautious skiers use a lower setting for easier release; aggressive or expert skiers use a higher setting for more retention), applies a small correction for boot sole length (shorter boots create less leverage on the binding and typically need a slightly higher setting), and applies the standard extra caution used for very young skiers and skiers aged 50 and over.
