The physics of a breakaway
A breakaway survives when the gap it holds cannot be closed by the chasing peloton before the finish line. This calculator uses the classic pursuit relationship: the peloton closes the gap at a rate equal to the difference between its speed and the breakaway’s speed. Converting the current time gap into a distance gap, then dividing by that speed difference, gives the time (and distance) at which the peloton would catch the break.
How to use the result
If the calculated catch point falls beyond the distance remaining in the race, the breakaway is likely to survive to the finish. If it falls within the remaining distance, the peloton should reel the riders back in before the line. Real races add variables like terrain, wind, team tactics, and fatigue that this simplified model does not capture.
