How Bike Frame Size Is Estimated
A properly sized bicycle frame lets you stand over the top tube comfortably and pedal with efficient leg extension. Frame size recommendations are commonly derived from your inseam length using ratios that differ slightly by bike type.
The Formula
Recommended Frame Size (cm) = Inseam Length (cm) × Ratio, where the ratio is about 0.70 for road bikes, 0.66 for mountain bikes (which use smaller frames for standover clearance), and 0.685 for hybrid or city bikes.
Important Caveat
Frame sizing also depends on torso and arm length, riding style, and each manufacturer’s specific geometry, so always check a brand’s own size chart and, where possible, test ride before buying. This calculator provides a general starting estimate for planning purposes only.
