What is the ponderal index?
The ponderal index (PI) is a measure of body proportion, similar in purpose to BMI, that relates weight to height. Unlike BMI, which divides weight by height squared, the ponderal index divides weight by height cubed, which makes it scale more consistently across a wide range of heights, including for very tall or very short people and for newborns.
How it is calculated
The formula is Ponderal Index = weight (kg) / height (m)³. Enter your weight and height in either metric or imperial units, and the calculator converts everything to kilograms and meters before applying the formula.
Typical adult ponderal index values fall roughly between 11 and 15 kg/m³, though there is no single universally agreed reference range the way there is for BMI. This tool is for general educational and planning purposes only and is not a substitute for professional health advice.
