What Is WAR?
Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is a sabermetric statistic that estimates how many additional wins a player contributes to their team compared to a readily available “replacement-level” player (a typical minor-league call-up or bench player) at the same position.
The Formula
WAR combines several run-value components into a single Runs Above Replacement figure, then converts runs to wins: WAR = (Batting Runs + Baserunning Runs + Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + Replacement Runs) / Runs Per Win. Replacement runs scale with playing time (roughly 20 runs per 600 plate appearances), and runs per win is typically around 10 in modern baseball.
How To Read It
A WAR around 2.0 is considered a solid everyday starter, 5.0+ is an All-Star caliber season, and 8.0+ is an MVP-level year. Different publishers (FanGraphs, Baseball-Reference) calculate the individual run components slightly differently, so this calculator provides a standard approximation for general analysis and educational purposes rather than an official league figure.
