How long does it take to thaw a turkey?
The USDA recommends two safe ways to thaw a whole turkey: in the refrigerator or in cold water. This calculator uses the standard USDA rule of thumb of about 24 hours of refrigerator thawing for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey, and about 30 minutes of cold water thawing per pound.
Refrigerator vs. cold water thawing
- Refrigerator (40°F / 4°C or below): the safest method. A thawed turkey can stay in the fridge 1-2 extra days before cooking.
- Cold water: keep the turkey in its original wrapper, submerge it in cold tap water, and change the water every 30 minutes until thawed. Cook the turkey immediately after this method.
This tool is for general meal-planning purposes. Always follow USDA food safety guidance and never thaw a turkey at room temperature.
