Why coffee-to-water ratio matters

The ratio between the weight of ground coffee and the weight (or volume) of water is the single biggest factor in how strong or weak your brewed coffee tastes. A tighter ratio like 1:14 produces a bolder, more concentrated cup, while a wider ratio like 1:18 produces a lighter, milder cup. Most specialty coffee guides recommend somewhere around 1:15 to 1:17 as a balanced starting point.

How this calculator works

Enter how many grams of coffee you plan to use and pick your target strength ratio. The calculator multiplies your coffee dose by the ratio to tell you exactly how much water to use, converted into milliliters, fluid ounces, and cups so you can measure however is easiest for your setup.

Since 1 gram of water is approximately 1 milliliter, this works for pour-over, drip machines, French press, and most other brewing methods. Adjust the ratio to taste and to match your specific beans and grind size.
