How This Calculator Works

This tool estimates safe turkey thawing times using guidance from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. There are two common approved methods, and the time needed depends almost entirely on the bird’s weight.

Refrigerator Method

The refrigerator is the safest way to thaw a turkey because it keeps the bird at a consistent temperature below 40°F, preventing bacterial growth. The standard rule is about 24 hours of thawing time for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey, so a 16-pound turkey needs roughly 4 days in the fridge. Once thawed this way, the turkey can safely stay in the refrigerator for another day or two before cooking.

Cold Water Method

If you’re short on time, the cold water method works much faster. Submerge the turkey in its original wrapper in cold tap water, changing the water every 30 minutes to keep it cold. This method takes about 30 minutes per pound. A turkey thawed this way should be cooked immediately afterward, since parts of it may warm above a safe temperature during the process.

Note: These figures are general planning estimates for home cooking. Always verify a turkey is fully thawed before cooking, and never thaw poultry at room temperature.
