How ski sizing works
Ski length recommendations are traditionally based on the skier’s height, with adjustments for ability level, body weight, and the type of ski. Shorter skis are easier to turn and more forgiving, which is why beginners are typically pointed toward shorter lengths, while advanced and expert skiers often prefer longer skis for stability at speed.
How this calculator estimates length
The calculator starts from your height and subtracts an ability-based offset – a larger reduction for beginners (skis reaching roughly chin height) and little to no reduction for experts (skis reaching the top of the head or beyond). It then applies a ski-type modifier, since powder and racing skis run longer for float and stability, while park/freestyle twin-tips run shorter for spins and maneuverability. Finally, a small weight adjustment is applied if your weight is notably higher or lower than typical for your height, since heavier skiers generally benefit from slightly longer skis for the same flex and float.
The result is shown as both a single recommended length and a +/-5cm range, since ski sizing is a guideline rather than an exact science – personal preference, terrain, and specific ski models all matter.
For general planning purposes only; always check the specific manufacturer’s sizing chart for the exact ski model you’re considering.
