What Is Game Score?
Game Score, developed by basketball analyst John Hollinger, condenses a player’s box-score line from a single game into one number that approximates overall production. It weights each stat category by its typical impact on winning.
The Formula
Game Score = PTS + 0.4 × FGM – 0.7 × FGA – 0.4 × (FTA – FTM) + 0.7 × ORB + 0.3 × DRB + STL + 0.7 × AST + 0.7 × BLK – 0.4 × PF – TOV. Positive-impact stats like points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks add to the score, while missed shots, fouls, and turnovers subtract from it.
How To Read It
A Game Score around 10 is an average NBA performance, 20+ is a very good game, 30+ is an outstanding game, and scores above 40 are historically rare, all-time performances. This calculator is intended for general sports analysis and fan entertainment purposes.
