What is maximum heart rate?

Maximum heart rate (max HR) is roughly the fastest your heart can safely beat during intense exercise. It’s commonly estimated with a simple age-based formula and used to define target training zones for different exercise intensities.

The formula

This calculator uses the classic formula: max HR = 220 – age. Training zones are then shown as percentage ranges of that max HR, from light activity (50-60%) up to maximum effort (85-100%), following the ranges commonly recommended by fitness organizations.

This is a general estimate for fitness planning, not a precise medical measurement — individual max heart rate can vary by 10-20 bpm from this formula. Consult a qualified professional before starting a new exercise program, especially with any heart condition.
