🏒 GAA Calculator (Goals Against Average)
Enter goals allowed and total minutes played to calculate a goaltender’s Goals Against Average (GAA), standardized to a 60-minute game.
What is Goals Against Average (GAA)?
Goals Against Average is a standard statistic for goaltenders in ice hockey, lacrosse, and similar sports. It measures how many goals a goaltender allows on average, standardized to a full 60-minute game, so goaltenders with different amounts of playing time can be compared fairly.
How it’s calculated
GAA is calculated as (Goals Allowed x 60) divided by Minutes Played. Multiplying by 60 converts the raw goals-allowed rate into a per-60-minute figure, which is the standard length of a hockey game (excluding overtime).
A lower GAA indicates better goaltending performance. In elite ice hockey, a GAA below about 2.50 is considered very good over a full season, while recreational and youth levels typically see higher numbers.
This calculator is for general statistical reference and comparison; some leagues use slightly different conventions (for example, excluding empty-net goals), so always check your league’s official scoring rules for competitive record-keeping.
