How scale ratios work
A scale ratio, written as 1:N, means that 1 unit of length on a scaled drawing, map, or model represents N of the same units in real life. For example, a scale of 1:100 means 1 cm on the drawing equals 100 cm (1 meter) in reality.
To find the real-world size from a scaled measurement, multiply the scaled length by N. To find the scaled size from a real-world measurement, divide the real-world length by N. Both directions use the same measurement unit throughout (for example, both in centimeters, or both in inches) since the ratio itself is unitless.
