What This Calculator Does
This tool converts natural gas quantities between the units most commonly seen on utility bills and energy reports: therms, MMBtu, cubic feet, cubic meters, and kilowatt-hours.
The Formula
All conversions route through British Thermal Units (BTU) as a common base: 1 therm = 100,000 BTU, 1 MMBtu = 1,000,000 BTU, 1 cubic foot of natural gas ≈ 1,000 BTU, 1 cubic meter ≈ 35.3147 cubic feet, and 1 kWh ≈ 3,412.14 BTU. The amount is first converted to BTU, then to every other unit.
Caveat
The heat content of natural gas varies slightly by source and region (typically 1,000–1,050 BTU per cubic foot), so this calculator uses a standard approximation of 1,000 BTU/ft³. For billing-accurate figures, always check your utility’s stated heat content factor. This tool is for general planning and educational purposes.
