What This Calculator Does
This tool converts fuel economy expressed in miles per gallon (MPG) into liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km), the unit used for fuel consumption across Europe, Australia, and most of the world outside the US.
The Formula
Fuel consumption is the inverse of fuel economy. First MPG is converted to kilometers per gallon by multiplying by 1.609344 (km per mile). Then L/100km = (liters per gallon ÷ km per gallon) × 100. Note that MPG is a measure of distance per unit fuel, while L/100km measures fuel per unit distance, so a lower L/100km value means better efficiency, the opposite relationship from MPG.
US vs UK Gallons
A US gallon (3.785 liters) is smaller than a UK imperial gallon (4.546 liters), so the same MPG figure represents different real-world efficiency depending on which gallon is used. Always check which standard your vehicle’s rating uses before comparing figures. This calculator is provided for general planning and educational purposes.
