How this calculator works

A common rule of thumb for spacing recessed (can) lights evenly is to divide your ceiling height by two to get the ideal spacing in feet between fixtures and from the walls.

This calculator takes your room’s length and width and divides each by that recommended spacing to determine how many lights fit comfortably along each direction, then multiplies those together for a total light count and grid layout.

This is a general planning guideline for ambient lighting; task lighting (over counters, reading areas) and dimmer switches may change your actual layout, and local electrical codes should always be followed for installation.
