What this calculator does

This tool finds the length of the hypotenuse (the longest side) of a right triangle when you know the lengths of the other two sides, called legs. It also estimates the two acute angles of the triangle.

The Pythagorean theorem

The theorem states that a² + b² = c², where a and b are the two legs and c is the hypotenuse. Rearranging for c gives c = √(a² + b²), which is the formula used here. The angles are then found using inverse sine on the ratio of each leg to the hypotenuse.

Good to know

This calculator assumes a true right triangle (one 90-degree angle). Use the same unit of measurement for both legs so the hypotenuse comes back in that same unit. Intended for general educational and planning use.
