What is passer rating?
The NFL passer rating (sometimes called quarterback rating) is a standardized formula used to compare quarterbacks’ passing performance. It combines completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown percentage, and interception percentage into a single number on a scale from 0 to a maximum of 158.3.
How the formula works
Four component values are calculated from a quarterback’s attempts: (a) completion rate, (b) yards per attempt, (c) touchdown rate, and (d) interception rate. Each component is scaled and then clamped between 0 and 2.375 so no single category can push the rating outside its normal bounds. The four components are averaged and multiplied by 100 to produce the final rating.
This is the official NFL formula, also used (with the same math) by the NCAA under a different name. It rewards accuracy, ball security, and explosive/scoring plays, but it does not account for rushing, sacks, or game situation, so it is best used alongside other stats rather than as the sole measure of quarterback play.
