What is save percentage?
Save percentage (SV%) is a standard statistic in hockey, soccer, and other goal-based sports that measures how effectively a goaltender stops shots on goal. It is one of the most widely used metrics for comparing goaltenders.
How it’s calculated
Save percentage is calculated as Saves divided by Shots Faced, where Shots Faced equals Saves plus Goals Allowed. The result is typically expressed as a decimal such as 0.910, though it is sometimes shown as a percentage such as 91.0%.
A higher save percentage indicates better shot-stopping performance relative to the number of shots faced. In elite ice hockey, save percentages typically range from about 0.890 to 0.925 over a season; in soccer, save percentage is usually shown as a straightforward percentage of shots on target saved.
