What this calculator does

It converts a raw step count — from a pedometer, phone, or fitness tracker — into a real-world walking distance in miles and kilometers, using your height and gender to estimate your typical step length.

The formula

Average step length is commonly estimated as a proportion of height: roughly Step Length = Height × 0.415 for men and Height × 0.413 for women, a widely used approximation for normal walking pace. Total distance is then Distance = Steps × Step Length, converted to kilometers and miles.

Actual step length varies with walking speed, leg length proportions, terrain, and stride style, so trackers that use your device’s own calibrated step length (from GPS-verified walks) will usually be more accurate than this general estimate.

For general fitness tracking purposes only.
