Cubic Yards to Tons Calculator

Estimate how many tons a given volume of material weighs, using typical density values for common landscaping and construction materials.

cu yd

Why volume-to-weight varies by material

A cubic yard of mulch weighs far less than a cubic yard of gravel because materials have different densities. To estimate weight from volume, you multiply the volume by the material’s typical density, usually expressed in tons per cubic yard.

How this calculator works

Enter the volume in cubic yards and select the material. The calculator multiplies your volume by a typical density estimate for that material (for example, gravel is roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, while mulch is closer to 0.5 tons per cubic yard) to give you an estimated total weight.

  • Gravel/crushed stone: ~1.4-1.5 tons per cubic yard
  • Sand/topsoil: ~1.1-1.2 tons per cubic yard
  • Mulch/wood chips: ~0.5-0.85 tons per cubic yard
  • Concrete: ~2.0 tons per cubic yard

These are industry-typical averages for general planning; actual density varies with moisture content, compaction, and specific product. For delivery orders, confirm exact weight with your supplier.
