What is acreage?

An acre is a unit of land area equal to 43,560 square feet, originally defined as the area a team of oxen could plow in a day. It is still the standard unit for measuring land, lots, and farms in the United States and several other countries.

How this calculator works

Enter the length and width of a rectangular plot and choose the unit you measured in (feet, meters, or yards). The calculator converts your measurements to square meters, then divides by 4,046.86 (the number of square meters in one acre) to get the acreage. It also shows the area in square feet and hectares for convenience.

  • 1 acre = 43,560 square feet
  • 1 acre = 4,046.86 square meters
  • 1 acre = 0.4047 hectares

For irregularly shaped land, break the plot into rectangles or triangles, calculate each separately, and add the results together. This tool is intended for general planning purposes and is not a substitute for an official land survey.
