What this calculator does

The Cattle per Acre Calculator estimates a sustainable stocking rate — how many cattle a pasture can support over a grazing year — based on acreage, forage production, and typical animal size.

How the estimate works

The calculation starts from an Animal Unit (AU), defined as a 1,000 lb cow eating about 2.6% of its body weight in dry forage per day. It applies the standard 25% harvest efficiency rule, meaning only about a quarter of total forage grown should actually be grazed each year to protect plant regrowth and soil health, and the rest is left as residual cover and root reserves. Dividing usable forage by one animal unit’s yearly intake, then adjusting for your cattle’s actual average weight, gives an estimated number of head the land can support.

  • Higher forage production per acre supports more cattle on the same land
  • Heavier cattle require more forage per head than lighter ones
