What this calculator does

The Grain Bin Calculator estimates how many bushels of grain a cylindrical storage bin can hold, based on its diameter and the depth of grain inside it, with an optional peaked cone on top for a fully filled bin.

How the formula works

The calculator finds the volume of the cylindrical section using V = π × r² × height, adds the volume of any cone-shaped peak using V = ⅓ × π × r² × cone height, and converts the combined cubic footage to bushels using the standard conversion of 1 bushel = 1.2445 cubic feet.

  • Leave Roof Cone Height at 0 for a flat-filled or partially filled bin
  • Bin diameter has the biggest effect on capacity since volume scales with the radius squared

A note on accuracy

Actual usable capacity can be affected by grain settling, moisture content, and bin structural fill limits, so use this as a planning estimate alongside your bin manufacturer’s rated capacity.
