What is generation time?
Generation time (also called doubling time) is how long it takes a population of bacteria or other microorganisms to double in number during exponential growth. It is a standard measurement in microbiology used to compare how fast different strains or conditions support growth.
The formula
This calculator uses the standard exponential growth formula: the number of generations n = log2(Nt / N0), where N0 is the starting count and Nt is the ending count. Generation time is then the elapsed time divided by n. The growth rate constant k = ln(Nt / N0) / t describes how quickly the population expands per unit time.
