How reticle range estimation works

Many binoculars and scopes include a mil-dot or milliradian reticle that lets you estimate distance to an object of known size by measuring how many ‘mils’ it spans in your field of view.

The formula

The standard mil relation is Distance = (Target Height × 1000) ÷ Mils Subtended, since one milliradian subtends 1 meter at 1000 meters distance. Height and distance must use the same length unit (this calculator uses meters for the target height).

Accuracy depends on how precisely you can measure the mils subtended and how accurately you know the target’s true height, so this is an estimation technique, not a precise rangefinder measurement. This calculator is for general outdoor and educational reference.
