What this calculator does
The American Wire Gauge (AWG) system assigns a number to standard wire sizes — the smaller the number, the thicker the wire. This calculator converts an AWG number into physical dimensions and electrical resistance.
The formulas
Wire diameter in millimeters follows the standard AWG geometric progression: d = 0.127 × 92^((36 − AWG)/39). Cross-sectional area is then A = π/4 × d², and resistance uses R = ρ × L / A, where ρ is the resistivity of the conductor material (about 1.68×10⁻⁸ Ω·m for copper, 2.82×10⁻⁸ Ω·m for aluminum at room temperature).
Actual resistance varies with temperature and wire stranding. This calculator is intended for general reference and educational planning, not as a substitute for checking manufacturer wire tables or applicable electrical codes.
