What Young’s modulus measures

Young’s modulus is a measure of a material’s stiffness, describing how much it stretches under a given tensile stress while still behaving elastically. It is calculated as E = stress / strain = (F/A) / (ΔL/L₀), where F is the applied force, A is cross-sectional area, ΔL is the change in length, and L₀ is the original length.

How this calculator works

Enter the applied force, the cross-sectional area of the sample, its original length, and how much it stretched. The calculator computes stress (force per unit area) and strain (fractional elongation), then divides stress by strain to give Young’s modulus in pascals, also shown in gigapascals for readability.

This formula only applies within a material’s elastic region, where it returns to its original shape once the force is removed; beyond the elastic limit the relationship is no longer linear. For general educational and engineering estimation purposes.
