What Is Batting Average?
Batting average (AVG) is one of the oldest and most familiar statistics in baseball and softball. It measures how often a batter reaches base safely with a hit, relative to their official at-bats.
The Formula
Batting average is calculated as hits divided by at-bats: AVG = H ÷ AB. The result is traditionally reported as a three-decimal number without the leading zero, for example .300 rather than 0.300, though this calculator shows the full decimal value for clarity.
What Counts as an At-Bat
At-bats exclude walks, hit-by-pitches, sacrifice bunts and flies, and catcher’s interference, since those plate appearances aren’t counted as official at-bats under standard scoring rules. This calculator is intended for general reference and does not replace official league scorekeeping.
