What is absolute eosinophil count
Absolute eosinophil count (AEC) is the actual number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell involved in allergic and parasitic responses) per microliter of blood, rather than just the percentage reported on a differential count.
How it’s calculated
AEC is calculated by multiplying the total white blood cell count by the eosinophil percentage (divided by 100): AEC = WBC × (Eosinophil % ÷ 100). A commonly cited normal reference range is roughly 0 to 500 cells/µL, with higher values referred to as eosinophilia, though exact lab reference ranges can vary.
