What affects twin chances
Twinning happens in two ways: identical twins, from one fertilized egg splitting, occur at a fairly constant rate of about 0.4% of pregnancies regardless of other factors; fraternal twins, from two eggs being released and fertilized separately, are influenced by maternal age, genetics, and fertility treatment, which is what this calculator models.
How the estimate is built
Starting from a general population baseline of roughly 3-4% of pregnancies, this tool applies published risk-factor associations: older maternal age (higher due to elevated FSH hormone levels), a family history of fraternal twins on the mother’s side (linked to a hyperovulation tendency), having had twins before, and fertility treatments such as ovulation-stimulating drugs or IVF, which substantially raise the odds of releasing or transferring more than one egg or embryo.
