What Crosstalk Measures

Crosstalk is unwanted signal energy that couples from one conductor, cable, or channel into a neighboring one through electric or magnetic coupling. It’s a common concern in cabling, PCB traces, and telecom lines, where a strong ‘aggressor’ signal can inject noise into a nearby ‘victim’ line.

The Formula

This calculator uses the standard voltage-ratio definition: Crosstalk (dB) = 20 × log10(Vnoise / Vsignal). A more negative dB value means better isolation (less coupling); a value close to 0 dB means the noise is nearly as strong as the signal itself, which is a serious problem.

This is a general educational estimate based on measured or datasheet voltages. Real-world crosstalk also depends on frequency, cable geometry, shielding, and termination, and is normally verified with test equipment for critical designs.
