This calculator turns a location’s historical odds of snow on Christmas Day into the probability of seeing at least one white Christmas over a longer stretch of years.
How the calculation works
Treating each year as an independent event, the chance of no white Christmas at all over N years is (1 − p)N, where p is the annual probability as a decimal. Subtracting that from 1 gives the chance of at least one white Christmas: 1 − (1−p)N. The expected count simply multiplies the annual probability by the number of years.
This is a simplified statistical estimate for general educational and fun planning purposes; real yearly weather isn’t perfectly independent, and you’ll need your own local historical snow data to plug into the calculator.
