What This Calculator Does

This calculator estimates corn (maize) grain yield in bushels per acre using the classic agronomic “yield component method,” based on plant population and ear characteristics measured in the field.

The Formula

The method multiplies plants per acre × ears per plant × kernel rows per ear × kernels per row to get total kernels per acre, then divides by 90,000, the standard assumed average number of kernels per bushel used in this widely taught estimation method.

  • Count kernel rows around the ear and kernels along one row on a few representative ears.
  • Ears per plant is usually close to 1 for modern corn hybrids but can be estimated from a field sample.

This method gives a useful pre-harvest estimate for general planning and educational purposes. Actual yield can differ because kernel size and weight vary with growing conditions, so the 90,000-kernel assumption is only an average approximation.
