What this calculator does
The Plant Spacing Calculator estimates how many plants can fit in a garden bed arranged in an evenly spaced grid, based on the bed’s dimensions and the recommended spacing distance for your crop or flower.
How the formula works
The calculator divides the bed’s length and width by the plant spacing (converted to feet) to find how many plants fit along each dimension, adding one to account for a plant at the starting edge: plants per row = floor(length ÷ spacing) + 1, and the same for rows across the width. Multiplying rows by plants-per-row gives the total plant count for a grid layout.
- Wider spacing means fewer, larger, better-aired plants with less disease pressure
- Tighter spacing means more plants but more competition for light, water, and nutrients
A note on accuracy
This assumes a simple rectangular grid; staggered or triangular spacing patterns (common for maximizing yield in small beds) can fit slightly more plants than a straight grid, and actual seed packet or nursery tag spacing recommendations should always take priority.
