What this calculator does

In classic photosynthesis experiments (such as measuring oxygen bubbles from aquatic plants like Elodea, or gas collected from a leaf disc setup), the rate of photosynthesis is calculated from how much oxygen gas is produced over a measured time period, normalized to the amount of plant material used.

How the math works

The calculator divides the volume of oxygen gas collected by the elapsed time to get a raw rate (mL O2 per minute), then divides that by the plant’s surface area so results from different sample sizes can be fairly compared. It also converts the rate to a per-hour basis, which is a common way photosynthesis rates are reported in biology coursework.

Real experimental rates vary with light intensity, temperature, CO2 availability, and plant species, so this calculator simply processes the numbers you measured; it does not correct for experimental conditions. This tool is for general biology education purposes.
