Calculating copper wire weight

The weight of a length of copper wire depends only on its cross-sectional area (from diameter), its length, and copper’s known density, making it straightforward to calculate for materials estimating, shipping, or scrap value purposes.

The formula

Cross-sectional area is A = πr2, where r is half the wire diameter. Volume is then Area × Length, and weight is Volume × Density, using pure copper’s density of 8,960 kg/m3 (8.96 g/cm3).

This calculates the weight of solid, pure copper conductor only; insulated cable, stranded conductors with air gaps, or copper alloys will weigh somewhat differently. This calculator is for general reference and estimating purposes.
