How ALC is calculated
The absolute lymphocyte count is calculated from a complete blood count with differential using the formula: ALC = White Blood Cell Count x (Lymphocyte Percentage / 100), converted to cells per microliter of blood.
What the result means
For adults, a typical normal range is roughly 1,000 to 4,000 cells per microliter, though exact reference ranges vary by lab and age group. A count below this range (lymphopenia) or above it (lymphocytosis) can occur for many reasons, including infections, autoimmune conditions, medications, or other underlying illnesses.
