What is On Base Percentage?

On Base Percentage (OBP) measures how often a batter reaches base safely, whether by a hit, a walk, or getting hit by a pitch. It is widely considered a better indicator of offensive value than batting average alone, because it credits a player for every way they avoid making an out.

How OBP is calculated

The formula is: OBP = (Hits + Walks + Hit By Pitch) ÷ (At Bats + Walks + Hit By Pitch + Sacrifice Flies). Sacrifice flies count toward the denominator because they are plate appearances that did not result in an out reaching base, but they are not classified as at bats.

OBP is usually expressed as a decimal to three places, such as .350. A league-average OBP is typically around .320 to .330, while elite hitters often reach .400 or higher.
