What is salt dough?

Salt dough is a simple, non-toxic modeling dough made from flour, salt, and water, popular for kids’ crafts, ornaments, and hand or foot print keepsakes. It air-dries hard or can be baked at a low oven temperature.

The ratio

The classic salt dough recipe uses a 2:1:1 ratio of flour to salt to water by volume (for example, 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water). This calculator scales the salt and water to match whatever amount of flour you enter, so you can make a bigger or smaller batch while keeping the same consistency.

Mix the flour and salt first, then gradually add water and knead until smooth and non-sticky, adding a little extra flour or water as needed. This is general craft guidance, not a food recipe — salt dough is not intended to be eaten.
