What RMR measures
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is an estimate of how many calories your body burns each day just to maintain basic functions like breathing, circulation and cell repair while at complete rest. It is closely related to Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and is commonly used as a starting point for calorie and diet planning.
How this calculator works
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, one of the most widely validated formulas for estimating resting energy needs: RMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years), plus 5 for men or minus 161 for women. It also shows estimated total daily calorie needs at a few common activity levels by multiplying RMR by standard activity factors.
- RMR is an estimate based on population averages — individual metabolism can vary due to muscle mass, genetics, hormones, and other factors.
- Activity multipliers shown are general approximations commonly used in nutrition planning, not precise measurements of your actual activity.
