ABSI Calculator
Calculate your A Body Shape Index (ABSI), a measurement that combines waist circumference, height and weight to estimate body shape independent of BMI.
What ABSI measures
A Body Shape Index (ABSI) combines waist circumference with height and BMI to estimate how much of your body weight is concentrated around your waist, independent of overall body size. Research suggests waist-focused measures like ABSI can capture health risk that BMI alone misses, since BMI cannot tell the difference between fat and muscle or where fat is stored.
How this calculator works
Enter your height, weight and waist circumference. The calculator first computes your BMI, then applies the standard ABSI formula: waist circumference (in meters) divided by BMI raised to the power of 2/3, multiplied by height (in meters) raised to the power of 0.5. A lower ABSI relative to population averages is generally associated with lower risk, and a higher ABSI with higher risk.
- ABSI values are typically small decimals, usually between about 0.07 and 0.09.
- The risk bands shown here are simplified and not tied to your specific age or sex, unlike full research z-score tables.
