Pine Straw Calculator

Estimate how many bales of pine straw mulch you’ll need to cover your garden beds at your desired depth.

What this calculator estimates

Pine straw (dried pine needles) is a popular garden mulch, sold in compressed bales. Coverage per bale depends on the type of pine straw and how deep you spread it: long-leaf pine straw is fluffier and typically covers more area per bale than the denser slash pine straw at the same depth.

How the estimate is calculated

This calculator starts from typical baseline coverage figures at a standard 3-inch depth, commonly cited as around 40 square feet per bale for long-leaf pine and about 35 square feet per bale for slash pine. It then scales that coverage inversely with your chosen depth, since spreading straw thicker or thinner changes how far each bale stretches. The area you enter is divided by the adjusted per-bale coverage and rounded up to a whole number of bales, since bales can’t be purchased as fractions.

Actual bale size and coverage vary somewhat by supplier and how tightly the straw is baled, so treat this as a general purchasing estimate and consider buying a few extra bales for uneven terrain or edging.
