What this calculator does

Ham cooking time depends heavily on whether it is fresh (raw and uncooked) or fully cooked (just needs reheating), on its weight, and on whether you have a whole ham or a half. This calculator uses standard USDA-style oven guidelines at 325°F to estimate total cook time.

How the estimate is built

Fresh, raw ham needs to reach a safe internal temperature of 145°F and generally takes about 19-24 minutes per pound at 325°F, with whole hams cooking slightly faster per pound than half hams because of their shape. Fully cooked ham only needs to be reheated to 140°F for food safety and best texture, which takes roughly 15-20 minutes per pound.

  • Fresh, whole: ~19 min/lb to 145°F
  • Fresh, half: ~24 min/lb to 145°F
  • Fully cooked, whole: ~15 min/lb to 140°F
  • Fully cooked, half: ~20 min/lb to 140°F

These are general planning estimates – actual oven performance, whether the ham is bone-in, and starting temperature all affect real cook time. Always confirm doneness with a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part, away from the bone, rather than relying on time alone.
